Natural gas, a fossil fuel, is formed much the same way oil and methane are formed – usually by high temperatures and extreme pressure (from gravity + sediment on top of it) breaking down carbon bonds in organic material. Lower pressure, like we would find just under the Earth’s crust, yields oil. Higher pressure, like we find 1-2 miles below the Earth’s crust, yields natural gas – and even higher pressure yields pure methane.
methane = natural gas.
