Mountain top mining usually involves using explosives to blast the mountain top to create access to resources such as coal. To reach the mountain top mining companies clear forests which would have enhanced water quality and prevented toxins from entering water sources. Mining companies often dump wastes into local valleys where they can eventually be washed into local water sources such as creek, streams, rivers, and lakes. In about 20 years mountain top mining has destroyed more than one thousand miles of streams, hundreds of miles of forested land, and hundreds of mountain tops.
