How does the Moon influence the Earth’s tides?

The moon controls tides mainly through its gravitational force.  The gravitational force of the moon pulls on the surface of the ocean until the ocean’s surface rises upwards and outwards in the direction of the moon (high tide).  The diurnal cycle of high and low tides corresponds to the consistent orbits of the moon around the Earth and the Earth around the Sun.
