How does a micro wind turbine work?

Micro wind turbines are actually fairly simple as to how they work.  A small turbine (usually 3-12 ft in diameter) is mounted on either a roof or tower.  Wind rotates the turbine and creates mechanical energy which spins a rotor that is able to harness the mechanical energy and turn it into electrical energy.  This electrical energy is then used to power a home.  It is a very efficient system that in some cases can be used to either lessen electricity costs or get rid of them altogether.  However, to be efficient they must have a good source of wind to spin them which can’t be found in all places.  The difference between the micro wind turbines and regular turbines is that the micro’s are generally used to power a single home as they have less potential for energy production.
