The effects of mercury poisoning vary a bit depending on the extent of the exposure, the type of mercury, and how it entered the body. In general though the symptoms of mercury poisoning in adults can include involuntary movements such as tremors, mood swing or other abnormal emotional behavior, loss of coordination, interference with cognitive processes, headaches, and impaired speech and hearing. In severe cases of higher exposure mercury poisoning can destroy the kidneys, digestive tract, cause respiratory failure, or death. If a fetus is exposed to too much mercury, the baby can be born with severe learning disabilities.
