How does mercury poisoning affect fish?

It is toxic to a fish’s brain and reproductive system. Gene expression is altered in the liver and gonad of minnows. The change in gene expression causes malfunctions with self-inflicted cell death (which is actually a natural process) and the immune system. There is also changes in protein structures in zebrafish. It seems like it varies from fish to fish.
