Lead can get into water in a number of ways. Most of the time lead gets into tap water from pipes or older fixtures that contain lead. Lead cannot be seen, smelled, or tested, so the only way to know for sure if there is lead in the water is to test it.
Lead can also get into groundwater when it is released into the environment in an unsafe way. If lead gets into the ground it can eventually make its way into groundwater and contaminate that source.
Lead leaches into drinking water from lead solder in old piping. The best way to prevent lead exposure is by using a water filter like brita or pur, both of which remove most lead from drinking water.
