While many things we use can be recycled or burned, much of our domestic waste still ends up in dumps and landfills, in addition to herbicides and pesticides widely used by farmers. The release of by-products by companies as well as chemicals released in the decomposition process can be harmful to our health (causing respiratory problems and even cancer) as well as the environment (destruction of plant and animal habitats). Hazardous solid waste can also attract pests and eventually cause the spread of disease. Solid waste affects both land animals as well as sea animals, with both chemicals and unnatural nonbiodegradable substances causing illness, injury, and death.
