How does ion beam milling work?

Ion beam milling is like an atomic sand blaster – it blasts tiny ion particles onto a work surface that has material that needs to be removed.  This is done inside of a vaccuum.  The force of the ion particles blasts off whatever is on the work surface.  This process is typically used for industrial, military, or satellite use in order to achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
