Infection is what happens whenever you get sick.
It hurts your body in several ways. One of the main ones is by forcing your body to use a lot of energy to combat it. This energy is taken away from other processes in your body which are also important. (Your body uses a system of prioritisation to pick which processes are halted in favor of others. ex: breathing and your heart are at the top)
The pathogens which have infected your body can also steal nutrients your body needs to function and kills cells.
Infections can challenge your immune system and overhaul it resulting in lower energy levels, and as the above answer notes, lower prioritization of other bodily functions. In people who are immunocompromised, infections are especially deadly because the immune system is already weakened, and even mild to moderate infections can cause severe reactions and even death.
