How does climate change impact national security?

Many of the effects of global warming that scientists have predicted, such as increased storms, droughts and floods, and other environmental disasters have the potential to add to existing problems of poverty and scarce resources in many parts of the world. These are conditions that tend to lead to increased social tensions, and which are often breeding grounds for terrorism and unstable regimes. Environmental disasters caused by global warming will create thousands or millions of “climate refugees,” who will need somewhere to flee to. The existing population in whatever haven they find may not welcome the flood of newcomers, and this again will tend to worsen social tensions and lead to situations of conflict. Global warming is an enormous national security threat, the full ramification of which most people still do not appreciate.
