The world’s first hybrid coal-solar power plant is located outside of Palisade, Colorado. Basically, solar collectors gather the sun’s energy to heat water. The water then goes into a coal-fired boiler that converts it into steam, and the steam is what drives a turbine to generate electricity. The solar power component reduces the plant’s coal usage by 2-3 percent.
