The distance a child lives from a highway can have a significant affect on their health not only as a child, but also in their adult life. Children living less than about 1/3 of a mile to a freeway have decreased lung function, and increased risk for respiratory and cardiovascular diesase later in life. Children living up to 1/3 of a mile from a freeway from age 10 to 18 were compared with children their age living at least one mile away.
Ideally, everyone would be living 1 mile from all freeways or highways. This alleviates the air pollution, noise pollution and other issues related to living to close by.
