The atmosphere is a necessary component for life on earth. The atmosphere acts as a sort of enormous blanket on the planet, keeping it at a relatively constant temperature throughout the day and throughout the year. During the daytime, it absorbs some radiation from the sun and reflects some away. During the night, residual heat from the day is trapped in the atmosphere and is released slowly, keeping the climate relatively warm. In comparison, some planets without an atmosphere will vary wildly in temperature simply from day to night.
