How does economics help or hurt the environment?

Economics dictates the financial well-being of a nation with respect to the basic principles of supply and demand.  The goods and services purchased by consumers are reflective of what the consumers continue to want and therefore companies continue to make and offer certain goods and services.  In that sense, economics can help propel us into the future of alternative energy and consequent better environmental practices.  However, the costs to producing newer and cleaner technologies and services has a high initial amount.  Companies would have to start from scratch and profit would take some time to increase.  In that sense, economics hurt the environment because new practices are costly to convert to in the short term.
