How does heat transfer work?

Heat transfer occurs when kinetic energy (in this case, heat) passes from high temperature material to lower temperature material. Heat transfer can be categorized into three basic groups: conduction (energy passes through metal using electrons), convection (heat conducted into fluid and the resulting pressure causes it to expand), and radiation (thermal energy is carried by photons of light within the electromagnetic spectrum).
