Heat can damage the environment in a number of ways. In theory, if the temperature of earth’s atmosphere increases, polar ice caps can begin to melt, adding cold water to the oceans (and causing disaster in some coastal cities). If the ice caps begin to melt, the overall temperature of the oceans could drop with the addition of cold water, interrupting the flow of currents through the world’s oceans. Many organisms use the temperature of the currents to direct their migrations, or more accurately, the temperature changes cause the currents to move in the directions they move.
