Hawaii’s main pollution woe is protecting its coastal waters. The difficulty in this is trying to contain soil contamination on the islands. They also must control lawn clippings and agricultural run-off, among other pollutants. There are several programs for isolating toxins in the soil and preventing them from making it to the sea. They try to remove polycyclic hydrocarbons from the soil, as well as trying to control other sources of contamination. This is a top priority for Hawaii, because its clear waters are a major draw to its tourist industry.
