Certain kinds of grass have long roots which enable them to reach farther into the ground to get more water. This is especially helpful to grass that experiences droughts often.
Grass can protect itself from insects as well. Some produce poisons or odors. Others secrete a nectar that attracts ants, which help defend the grass.
