How does genetic drift work?

Genetic drift is similar to natural selection except it is not based on what organisms are best for the environment its based on what organisms happen to get picked by chance. If some natural disaster or some other selector randomly selects a few chosen survivors and those survivors pass on their traits to their progeny, that is an example of genetic drift.
