Geothermal energy is power extracted from heat already stored in the earth, and so originated from the original formation of the earth, radioactive decay of minerals, and from solar energy absorbed at the earth’s surface. Geothermal plants have the capacity to generate about 10 gigawatts of electricity, and are the source of about 0.3 percent of global electricity. In general, geothermal energy plants have been built on the edges of tectonic plates, where high temperature geothermal resources are available close to the earth’s surface.
