How does gene therapy work?

Gene therapy targets specific undesirable genes and aims to replace or repair them.  It is used in attempt to cure diseases such as hereditary ones.  Broadly speaking, the bad gene is targeted and a more functional gene is inserted in order to replace it or fix it.  The most common approach to this is to insert a functional gene into a non-specific place within the genome and just let it take over the non-functioning gene.  Check out wikipedia’s page to read more details about some less common approaches to gene therapy.
