How does friction affect energy efficiency?

Friction has a tendency to make things less energy efficient. This is because the machine has to do more work in order to overcome the friction afflicting it. Machines these days can never be 100% efficient because of friction, but we actually need friction to work things like tires (they need friction to be able to grip the road and move).
