How does a forest naturally get rid of weak trees?

If the forest is dense enough, weak trees simply will not get enough sunlight, water, or nutrients in the soil because bigger, stronger trees will basically hog all these necessary components of plant life for themselves. Without water, the plants will dry out, and without sunlight, the plants will be unable to conduct photosynthesis and will also not survive.

In addition, weak trees are much more susceptible to disease and pest problems, which can be secondary causes of death.
