I was not able to find anything documenting a direct link between these two state symbols, the Sabal Palmetto and the Florida Panther, but both inhabit the same area, the Big Cypress National Preserve. Sabal palms are very popular landscaping trees, but are culled from the wild rather than grown on farms. My guess would be that perhaps people are encroaching onto the endangered panther’s territory to harvest these palms, and as usual habitat destruction is one of the biggest causes of endangerment of any species.
