How does the EPA monitor recycling centers?

It depends on the type of waste that the center is recycling.  Generally, recycling centers must handle whatever substances they accept according to the same regulations that the manufacturers had to follow.  The EPA sets these standards and checks in on both manufacturers and recycling centers to make sure that these substances are being created and disposed of properly. If they don’t, they will be fined or even shut down.

Each type of waste has specific regulatory procedures that must be followed in order to comply with the EPA’s standards.  To see the standards required for each type of waste, check out the link.
