How does the energy star rating work?

ENERGY STAR is a government-backed label that products can earn if they meet product specifications set forth by the EPA. Some of the guidelines (which can be seen in full through the first citation), include:

    • A significant contribution to nationwide energy saving.
    • Energy performance and consumption can be verified through testing.
    • Though the cost of the product is higher than a less-efficient alternative, the energy savings will cover the increased cost over a reasonable period of time.
