How does an eddy form?

Various processes are believed to play a hand in creating eddies. The largest of these is the Coriolis effect – a balance of two major forces of the Earth. Ocean flow over a seamount (or air flow over a mountain) can also create an eddy. Finally, large scale waves and the vertical movement of water can make an eddy happen.
