The temperature of the Earth has been changing constantly since it first formed 4.5 billion years ago. Measuring soil and ice cores can help reveal facts about the Earth’s atmosphere including temperature from millions of years ago. Scientists are able to predict facts about past temperatures based on these results. For instance, analysis has revealed that in the late 1500s, the earth experiences a ‘little ice age’ where global temperatures inexplicably fell by more than a degree Celsius, only to return to normal a few years later.
