How does the earth make oil?

The conventional theory has been that long-dead organisms, from the age of the dinosaurs, leave oil behind as a byproduct or a decay. Therefore oil is organic, a “fossil fuel.” However, recent findings seem to be indicating that at least some oil is synthesized abiotically–without living organisms. It may be manufactured in the mantle of the earth, where hydrocarbons are synthesized without any living material. This could mean that oil is not as scarce as we think, and that it may be present on other planets!
