Desertification is the degradation of previously vegetated land primarily through anthropogenic causes. It may be due to overgrazing of animals, overcultivation, deforestation, or depletion of groundwater or climate change. Disappearance of the plant life in an area as a result of these activities may destroy soil quality and encourage erosion. When the top layers of soil are blown away by wind, evaporation accelerates and soil salinity increases, making the area much more inhospitable for regrowth of vegetation, ultimately turning it into a desert.
