How does cold weather hurt reptiles?

Reptiles are cold blooded which means they can not control their internal body temperature. So cold weather makes all their internal body functions slow down. If it gets cold enough it will actually make these processes stop ending the life of the reptile.

Reptiles that live in cold regions of the world are adapted to live there. Turtles will burrow into the mud at the bottom of lakes and hibernate. Snakes and lizards will enter burrows where they will spend the winter. Reptiles must get into their burrows before it is too cold. If the weather suddenly changes, some individuals may lose their lives because they have no protection or ability to keep their bodies warm.

Snakes and other reptiles that have been introduced to colder climates likely suffer during the winter. They may die because they are not adapted to live in that area.
