In the past few years, a growing awareness of human kind’s impact on the environment has brought to light a lot of negative impacts that chemistry has had on the environment. After all, it is chemistry that is behind the formulation of all the dangerous chemicals in our world today, including pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and pesticides, gasoline, cosmetics, cleaning products, building materials, food additives…the list is practically endless.
Despite all this, though, we must not forget that chemistry is at the very root of our understanding of the natural world; and for this reason, it is likely through chemistry that we will be able to resolve many the world’s environmental problems. Currently, chemistry is being employed to help the environment in many ways, including the development of renewable fuels, bioplastics, hydrogen fuel cells, insulating materials, and natural alternatives to everyday products.
