How does carbon dating work?

Carbon dating works by looking at the half-life of radioisotrope carbon-14. As time goes by, carbon-14 degrades into carbon-12, so by knowing the half-life of carbon-14, scientists can measure how long time has passed by looking at the proportions between carbon-14 and carbon-12.
