How does soil become salinized?

Salinization is the accumulation of soluble salts of sodiuml, magnesium, and calcium in soil much to the detriment of soil fertility. This can be brought about by natural causes (e.g. high salt content of parent material) or anthropogenic/man-made causes, such as certain irrigation practices (e.g. use of salt-rich irrigation water).
