How does the author of Scroogenomics argue against holiday shopping?

I haven’t read the book, but it seems to be a pretty economic argument. Basically, lots of money is wasted on presents during the holiday season, and a lot of times they are presents that the recipient doesn’t really want. If we cut back on holiday shopping & instead just spend on ourselves, we are at least guaranteed that someone is satisfied by the spending (you know what you want and need better than you know what anyone else wants and needs.)
