How does snorkeling affect ecosystems?

Most people who go snorkeling are tourists, not avid snorkelers. Many are unable to control their body positioning in the water. As a result, coral gets stepped on millions of times by snorkelers, or sand can get kicked up onto it. This is very damaging and often kills reefs. Reefs are a living organism that support life for numerous sea creatures.

Boats used to take snorkelers out to secluded coves and reefs sometimes anchor in coral which causes great damage to the reefs. Engines that are not properly cared for can emit harmful petroleum pollution which kills marine life.
