An important way which sea water helps to regulate the earths environment is through its ability to extract carbon dioxide from the air. As the amount of carbon dioxide increases so does the acidification of the earth’s seas. This is very damaging to certain types of marine life. Coral is particularly vulnerable to the increasing acidification and the Center for Biological Diversity recently filed a petition to include 83 species of coral on the endangered species list. Shelled creatures are another type which are at risk because the acidification effects the creation of their carpace.
