How do your ears help with balance?

The ear has a system of semicircular canals in which there are tiny hairs.  This system acts like a gyroscope.  The liquid in these canals causes the hair to move, the movement of these hairs sends nerve signals that indicate gravity, position, and movement through space.  There are also hair cells and tiny crystals in the uticle and saccule.  As the calcium crystals move over the hairs, nerve endings in the macule are stimulated and signals are sent to the brain to indicate position changes.
