The two metals most recycled in domestic, curbside recycling are steel and aluminum. Separating them is easy because steel will be attracted to a magnet, while aluminum will not. A large magnet may be run over the metals to be recycled, or the process could involve the metals going past/around/etc. a series of smaller magnets.
Copper can also be recycled, but not in your usual curbside recycling bin. Companies that recycle copper require that you sort out the metals beforehand.
