Shagbark nuts were typically husked and dried for a few weeks by native american tribes. Then the nut meat was carefully removed from the shells. If you are able to exclude squirrels and jays from the area, you may be able to collect already spilt hickory shells from the ground. Roasting in the shell is another way to improve flavor and add aid in cracking the husk.Ripe/Cracking Shagbark Hickory Nuts: Photo credit, Annie Hintsala
