The first thing you can do is check with your local recycling agency and see if they have a program for old paint. Most cities are able to redistribute the paint to low-income households or community groups. If you cannot locate a recycling facility for your paint, fill a paper bag or disposable container with litter, sawdust, sand, or a similarly absorbent material and poor the excess paint into that. Allow that to dry and then you can throw that away. Leave the paint can and lid open and allow them to dry for at least 24 hours. Then the paint is “safer” to be thrown away.
