It’s pretty much how you’d grow any other plant so large. Sometimes it’s just pure luck. Other times there’s special fertilizer blends or special growing techniques. Farmers seem to have many secrets for growing large produce.
Good question, elle189. Every step of the pumpkin growing process is important to grow a large pumpkin, but because they are also important to grow a pumpkin at all, I will focus on the two main things you can do to help your chances at getting a large pumpkin. First, as cfraissi pointed out, fertilizer is important. For large pumpkins, it is recommended to use “approximately 2 pounds nitrogen (N), 3 pounds phosphorous (P2O2) and 6 pounds potash (K2O) per 1,000 square feet of growing space.” Also, manure is recommended for good soil tilth. The other main process that is important to growing large pumpkins is how you pollinate them. It is recommended to pollinate only once there are at least 200 leaves, and to only allow 4-6 pumpkins per plant, then, once the pumpkins have gotten to be volleyball size, get rid of all but one pumpkin. This will help to ensure there is no competition for your giant pumpkin. For more details, follow the link I have provided below.
Hope this helps!
elle189, there are many methods of inducing quite literally superhuman growth, from electrical root stimulation to ultrasonic frequency distribution, there is no shortage of innovative superfood cultivation methods. Hope I helped, and have a green day!
