Conservation Biology, the practice of studying and protecting the biodiversity of the Earth, is a complex and interesting area of study. The practice is a unique blend of natural sciences like biology and chemistry, social sciences like economics and sociology, and ethical and moral considerations. The question becomes how do we balance our own survival, the Earth’s survival and biodiversity’s survival all together. The primary tool used to protect biodiversity is historical comparisons. Scientists look at the five major extinctions that have occurred since Earth’s creation juxtaposed to the Earth;’s current situation to better understand how humans and nature affects biodiversity and ecosystems around the globe and how best to protect them in the coming years.
