How do we use fossil fuels for power generation?

Essentially fossil fuels generate energy through combustion. The fossil fuel, be it coal or natural gas, is burned to heat either water or air which is then run through a turbine. The turbine in turn uses magnets to produce the electricity that comes out of our power sockets. It is this combustion that releases carbon and other pollutants into the atmosphere.
