Sodium borate or Borax is a boran compound as well as a salt and an acid. Borax is commonly found in various detergents and cosmetics and (until its recent banning in the USA) a preserving agent. It should also be noted that Borax is used in many other products such as enamel, insecticide and even in vaccines.
The greatest use of boron, which comes from the mineral borax ( a hydrates sodium borate) is glass. Boron makes glass stronger, reduces its expansion when heated (so oven doors often have a lot), and makes it more chemically resistant. Three-quarters of the boron used in the US goes to glass and ceramics.
