Landfills give off methane, a gas which can be used to generate electricity. Microscopic bacteria break down the organic wastes in landfills, producing vast amounts of methane gas, which can be harnessed. The methane gas is forced upward and into the plant where it turns a turbine to generate power or electricity. Capturing the methane prevents it from entering the atmosphere as it normally would, contributing to climate changes as it is a greenhouse gas.
