How do we study planets in space?

Planetary science is accomplished like all sciences; by making observations and collecting data. This started with human eye observations which were enhanced by telescopic images from telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope. Aerial photography and satellite imagery has greatly assisted in mapping and studying planets. The Magellan, Voyager and Galileo missions were spacecraft designed to map and probe the planets and other phenomena in the solar system. The Pathfinder and Sojourner vehicles were sent to Mars to study the surface. Man has been able to physically study the moon by landing on it. There are many avenues available to scientists to study planets, perhaps one day including visiting them.
