How do we monitor water quality in rural areas?

Water is tested in rural areas the same way it is in urban areas. If there is no water utility company that is responsible for distributing and testing the water then the water must be brought to a lab facility that runs a number of tests to check for potability. Additionally, water quality testing packages are available for individuals but are not as reliable as laboratory testing:

“Basic Water Potability Test packages include tests for coliform bacteria, nitrates, pH, sodium, chloride, fluoride, sulphate, iron, manganese, total dissolved solids, and hardness.”
