There are a variety of ways that this is and could be done, but I think the easiest and most practical answer is by letting the trash company take care of it. MIT has taken a stab at the process by tagging around 3,000 pieces of trash in Seattle in order to make people reconsider what they’re throwing away. According to an MIT spokesperson, the purpose of the experiment is to get people to reconsider their behavior, and a display at the Seattle library will conclude the experiment.
